Hanging with my Amish friends today

I know that I would tell people when I was laid off from my job, that I was going to turn a little Amish. I was going to stay on the farm and have a garden and not really care about ‘stuff’ too much. Well I sure like my electricity and also my car .. so I guess that it really didn’t come true. Oh yea, also my indoor plumbing 🙂 But today I went to the local Amish community to pick up our trampoline tarp and I had the nicest visit with the guy. We talked for about 20 minutes and honestly I think he would have visited more, but there was some buggy’s pulling into his yard and I thought I’d better get out of there. I could hear some yelling going on outside from I think his wife, and I wasn’t sure just what that was all about. It looks like he did a real nice job on the tarp, and tomorrow I’ll take it out and give it a good look over. His shop is so cool and it reminds me of my dad’s old shop when I was a kid. What I remember is that he had a lot of tools hung up and when we were kids we weren’t allowed to touch any of them but we could spend the afternoon sweeping to help out. His shop used to be in one of the buildings right by our playhouse and I wonder if that was just coincidence or if it was planned? Looking through all these old slides of my folks, I haven’t seen one of him in his old tool shop. That’s kind of a shame because I think it would have been a pretty cool picture.

I took a couple of pictures today when I was at the Amish. The one that I think I’ve never seen anything like it before is the one with the gourds strung through the yard. It looks like they made bird houses out of them. I’m not sure what kind of bird you’d want to have around just that much other than purple martins … but I did see some birds inside when I stopped to take a look at them.

Horses and buggy's are all over in this neck of the woods

Check out all the gourd houses on the windmill

Then I went to take a look at some fabric for a chair that I think I’m going to reupholster. It was a chair that my Mom was going to throw out and burn, so I took it instead to our house. And you guessed it, it’s been stored in our basement. Since I’ve been working on cleaning out the basement, I thought I’d better make a decision on what I’m going to do with it. I really like it and I think the fabric that I picked out today will look pretty good on it. I’d like to put the chair in our living room when (or if) I ever get it done. I know that I’ve got wayyyy too many projects started and not too many of them done, but maybe one more wouldn’t hurt.
